Building a Smarter Health and Productivity Management Solution – Healthy Employees, Lower Costs

The prevalence of preventable conditions such as obesity and diabetes adds another compelling reason for employers to implement health-promotion programs. And there's strong evidence that these initiatives can yield a significant return on investment: recent review of health-promotion programs reported benefit-to-cost ratios ranging from $1.49 to $4.91 (median of $3.14) in benefits for every dollar spent on the program.

With traditional health promotion and disease management programs generating relatively low participation rates, many employers are turning to Web based programs to broaden their reach. Web-based health and productivity management programs provide an efficient and cost-effective way to serve a large base of employees, regardless of location. But simply putting a program on the Web won't guarantee success. Many of these programs fail because of poor communication, inability to engage members, and a lack of integration with other programs and health benefits.

These potential stumbling blocks can be addressed in the planning stages to ensure a successful initiative. A thoughtful implementation strategy is more likely to lead to a smooth rollout - and desired outcomes of healthier employees.

Having worked with numerous companies in rolling out online health promotion programs over the last few years, Miavita and Aetna have identified three stages critical to successful implementation:

  1. Discovery: Set program goals, select a program and secure buy-in with your leadership team.

  2. Planning and Launch: Set the stage for success by developing a strong implementation plan and  working closely with your program supplier to execute it.

  3. Post–Launch Program Development: Promote long–term adoption and success.
