Matria's Approach to Behavior Change
Behaviors are lifelong habits. While some behaviors may be more firmly entrenched than others, changing an individual's mindset is the true challenge. When encouraging changes in behavior, it is critical to take into account the individual's readiness to change. Our model has evolved from James Prochaska's Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change, in which interventions are tailored for individuals based on their readiness to change at a given time. We have used this model to personalize our programming and target our action-oriented content to those who will benefit most from it. For example, individuals in preparation or action stages when they begin their program are directed to tips, messaging and tools that have a strong action orientation. Individuals who are not yet prepared to change are provided with information that will raise their awareness and help move them towards the action phase. In addition, Matria's model for promoting behavior change is based on incremental improvements. In order for lasting change to occur, an individual must be educated, prepared, motivated and supported.
Experiential Learning
Matria's programs follow principles of experiential learning for adults. Experiential learning refers to applied knowledge that can be used in a person's day-to-day life. The key to experiential learning is to address the individual needs of the learner. By personalizing our programs to the unique circumstances of each individual, we create an environment that is more conducive to applied learning.
Tailored, Action-Oriented Programming
One of the keys to success in reducing health risks is to keep individuals fully engaged and motivated to make changes. An effective behavior-change program will tailor content to each user, providing interactive tools and action-oriented programming that are likely to lead to a reduction in health risks. When users complete a Wellness Assessment, they receive an action plan with specific recommendations based on their health status. We have found that users are more likely to enroll in a program and commit to making lifestyle changes if they are aware of their specific risk factors.
Editorial Standards
Matria content creation is the responsibility of Matria's independent editorial staff. Content creation projects are overseen by full-time members of the Matria staff, who may contribute articles themselves, assign articles to other members of the full-time editorial staff, or work with contracted writers. In all cases, Matria editors and writers are experienced journalists and/or health professionals. Before any staff position or assignment is offered, candidates are carefully screened, and must demonstrate their professional credentials in their assigned content area. All authors must meet our established professional criteria to contribute to the Web site.
Scientific Review Board
Matria's Scientific Advisory Board includes some of the most distinguished health professionals in the world, affiliated with some of the most prestigious institutions of healthcare and universities. Members contribute to the overall direction of the Matria programs and major content areas of the Web site and assist with the regular review of the content on the site. When, in the judgment of Matria's professional staff, an article contains any disputable scientific and/or medical facts, it is sent to a member of the Matria Scientific Advisory Board before publication for review and approval.
